Jewayne M Price Arrested After Columbiana Center Shooting

After the Columbiana Center mall shooting in South Carolina, Jewayne M. Price has been arrested by the Columbia, SC police department. The suspect is facing a charge of unlawful carrying a pistol. The incident left 14 people injured. Police did not name the shooter, but did say that the suspect was one of three persons of interest. He is expected to be charged with a number of charges including carrying a pistol without a license.

State Rep. Todd Rutherford spoke after Price’s bond hearing Tuesday. He said his client had shot in self defense and did not have a concealed weapons permit. He said his client had cooperated fully with police, but that he did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Rutherford also noted that Price has a clean criminal history and does not have a concealed-weapons permit.

Police say the number of injured has been raised from the original 12 to 14. Nine people suffered gunshot wounds, while another five were hit as they fled the mall. The victims range in age from 15 to 73. As of Sunday, only one person remains in the hospital. The rest have been treated and released. Price’s attorney has not yet been identified. Price is expected to appear in court at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Although Price is charged with a variety of crimes, the Columbia police department is still working to identify two additional suspects. He will be charged with Unlawful Carrying a Pistol. The Columbia Police Department is working with the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office in determining the appropriate charges for him. Prices’ bonding will be based on their current status as a person of interest.

Rutherford believes Price was the victim of an attack, but would not comment on it further. However, she noted that Price had previously faced threats on Facebook, which the victim shared with the police. He also called his family and turned himself in at the scene. In addition, the case is still in the hands of the grand jury. It will be interesting to see what comes of Price’s next. We’ll be following this case closely!

Earlier this month, the Columbia Police Department made a second arrest. Marquise Robinson is now being held at the Lexington County Detention Center. Robinson is scheduled to appear in municipal court on Tuesday at 9 a.m. If he is held for these charges, he may face jail time in the meantime. This is a tragic outcome for the community. So, let’s keep our friends and family members safe and well.
